The year before, A&W Canada unveiled its root beer that is made from natural cane sugar, and all-natural flavors. This was the first time for any restaurant of its dimensions in Canada and also marked a major step in the company's efforts to procure only natural ingredients.

"Again and again our guests tell us that they're amazed that something so good can come from such simple ingredients," Senecal added. Senecal and added that the natural flavors are what make A&W's root beer unique. Natural cane sugar is the source of the sweetness, sarsaparilla root to give distinct vanilla wintergreen, caramel and Birch bark to give subtle minty notes Licorice adds sweet and spicy undertones and anise is responsible for the aromatic notes of tarragon and fennel.

    A&W's first Canadian A&W establishment opened its doors within Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 1956.[8 The Canadian A&W restaurants were part the American chain up until 1972, when they were purchased by Unilever.
